Should Starkville allow Alcohol Sales on Sunday?
The advantages of selling alcohol on Sundays would help sales tax and tourism tax revenues generate the city to provide incentive for national restaurant chains and boost Starkville's image as a progressive college town. The disadvantages would be the increase in accidents, crime, and increased levels of DUI arrests. Some people have strong feelings about this issue because of Sunday being a holy day and a day set aside for worship, families, and rest. Other people raised the question about separation of church and state and whether the government could legally stop the sale of a legal substance. I think that both sides have good points, and the Starkville Board of Aldermen will have a hard decision to make on this issue. The Starkville Board of Aldermen will meet on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. in the City Hall courtroom to discuss this issue of alcohol sales on Sunday.
